Virginia whitewater - Little Stony Creek, Scott County Scott county, Little Stony Falls to Hanging Rock section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS V+     3 miles   This stretch of Little Stony Creek is 3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V+ section. The natural beauty of Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The starting location is a short drive from Kingsport-Bristol, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or     kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This is a somewhat short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Briefly about the general area: Pound Gap is a delightful location to spend some time at. For the period of the months of summer here at Little Stony Creek, high temperatures ordinarily get into   the 80's while night lows are typically in the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Little Stony Creek are in the 20's. It is of the upper falls on Little Stony Creek. I have been doing climate research in this area of the great High Knob massif, for some 20 years. This is a high precipitation area on average. It should be understood that the High Knob massif forms a sprawling highcountry area along the Wise-Scott border ( into extreme NE Lee County ), and from base to base represents the widest mountain mass in all of southwestern Virginia.
