  Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Charlottesville, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots
    of paddling places. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you have the time you
can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Charlottesville Reservoir to Free Union stretch is one of them. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. This stretch of Moormans River in Albemarle County is 13.5 miles long and has been determined by American  
Whitewater to be a class I-III section.

Briefly about the general area:
Hiking along the Big Run Trail is good fun, and Moormans River is not far at all from Free Union. Take a hike on the Falls Trail. Moormans River gets a typical amount of rainfall. The wettest month of the year is usually August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is January. For the period of the days of summer at Moormans River highs are mostly in the 80's. Summer overnight lows sink down to the 60's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at Moormans River temperatures descend to the 20's.
