The Claytor Lake to State line stretch of New River in Virginia is 52.2 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Virginia and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, as you can see on the road map further down. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your
camping gear along. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Claytor Lake to State line section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. The average Virginia whitewater rafting
or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: New River gets a typical amount of rain; July is the wettest month with most rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. High temperatures at New River throughout the warm months are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 30's; overnight lows at New River during the wintertime ordinarily drop into the 20's.
