The put-in is not too far from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Claytor Lake to State line section     is one of them. The campgrounds here at New River are pretty good. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so it looks like you will be camping out. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The natural beauty of Virginia and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Briefly about the general area: Summertime brings highs in the 80's to New River, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 30's,   and nighttime lows at New River during the wintertime generally plunge into the 20's.
