The wonderful Carroll/ Wythe/ Pulaski/ Grayson County scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The Fries to Allisonia section of New River is 32 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. No
shortage of good hotels, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Fries to Allisonia stretch is just one of them. If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you
can see on the road map further down. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so it looks like you will be camping out. The beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great plus for this river. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: New River gets a common amount of precipitation; during May this area sees the most rain, and November on the other hand is the driest. Summertime
highs at New River generally tend to be in the 80's; the night is fairly chillier of course, frequently in the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's; winter nights come with lows in the 10's to New River.
