Carroll/ Wythe/ Pulaski/ Grayson
county,
Fries to Allisonia section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 32 miles
The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The Fries to Allisonia stretch of New River is 32 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there
are others too. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Great exercise and just
hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the water flowing gracefully down New River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
