The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. The Fries to Allisonia section of New River in Carroll/ Wythe/ Pulaski/ Grayson County is 32 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Fries to Allisonia
stretch is just one of them. The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The campgrounds here at New River are pretty good. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus.

the driest month is November. Summer at New River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's with nighttime lows in the 50's. For the period of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at New River are in the 10's.
