The starting location is a short drive from North Wilkesboro, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. Now this is a pretty long section,     so better bring your camping gear along. There's camping available near New River. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Stuart Dam to Fries section is just one of them. The scenic beauty of Virginia and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. For the period of the dark hours of   summer temperatures sink down into the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's while the cold winter nights at New River are in the 10's. A delightful location in close proximity to New River is Low Gap, and the Perkins Knob Trail is a glorious hiking trail close by. New River gets a normal amount of annual rain; the month with most of the rain is July while January is frequently the driest month.
