The beautiful scenery of Hanover County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. There are no other stretches to paddle along Newfound River than the Rocketts Mill to US 1 stretch. There are nice comfortable hotels here,     but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Richmond, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good places for that around here. Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Newfound River a wet spot; the month with most of the rain is August, and April is when it's the driest. At Newfound River during the summer months highs   are in the 80's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 60's. During the winter highs are in the 40's; nighttime lows at Newfound River during the winter frequently descend into the 20's.
