Virginia whitewater - North Anna River, Hanover County
Hanover
county,
Butler Ford Bridge to Route 1 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 9.5 miles
This is not an afternoon trip, if water is low it's easily an entire day trip, if it is low plan on dragging quite a bit, still fun but wear proper shoes! It can be turned into an overnight two day fishing trip if you have permission from private landowners to camp. The only public land along this river is at the take out at Rt.1, all other lands are private property. The put in is private property, has approx. 4-5 ''parking spaces''. The owner allows those that paddle only to park there. $1 is requested for parking. $1 does not include your trash
removal, there is a waste can available. Please help keep the land and river clean. There is a big drop at falls hole near the end of the trip that can bend even the most experienced paddlers craft in half. I beleive it is considered to be a class V. Most take out and walk around.
What you pack in, pack out, and you will be welcomed. Leave it like you found it and have fun! Says Anna
This section of North Anna River in Virginia is 9.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. The wonderful Hanover County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down North Anna River attract people from near and far. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are very
easy. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. No need to look hard for hotels, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
North Anna River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Butler Ford Bridge to Route 1 section is the only one. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. For all you camping people there are campgrounds
nearby. If you're coming from Richmond it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that.
