The Elizabeth Furnance to Waterlick stretch of Passage Creek in Warren County is 6 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Warren County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Passage Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Winchester, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. Whether you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip.
Briefly about the general area: While you're here at Passage Creek you have to check
out Blue Hole, and do take a hike on the Passage Creek For Trail. All through the days of summer here at Passage Creek, high temperatures frequently get into the 80's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are typically in
the 40's while Passage Creek nighttime low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 10's. Man, is there lots of cool things to do in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Passage Creek is right next door to Fort Valley which is unquestionably worth stopping at, and why not take a refreshing
hike along the Shawl Gap Trail. The surroundings of this river have so much to offer. From a precipitation point of view Passage Creek is a rather normal place; July is the month that gets the most rain, and February on the other hand is the driest.
