Virginia whitewater - Pedlar River, Blue Ridge Mountains, Amherst County Amherst county, Route 640 to Highway 130 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I(II)     6 miles   The Route 640 to Highway 130 stretch of Pedlar River is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I(II) section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The scenic beauty of Amherst County and the water flowing gracefully down Pedlar River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. You can pitch a tent or     park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. This is a pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Route 640 to Highway 130 section is one of them. The starting point is not too far from Lynchburg, as you can see on the road map further down. Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Pedlar River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's while night lows are usually in the 60's. High temperatures through   the winter are normally in the 40's, and throughout the dark hours in the winter at Pedlar River temperatures descend to the 20's. The Cashaw Creek Trail is a fine hiking trail next to Pedlar River. Pedlar River gets a normal amount of annual rainfall; through May this area sees the most rain, and the driest of the months is January.
