Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. The nature scenery of Nelson/Amherst County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in is not too far from Staunton-Waynesboro, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Some people prefer
whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
The Alhambra to Woodson section of Piney River in Virginia is 3.5 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: On a great day at Piney River you can take a hike along the Tolley Gap Trail. For the duration of the warmest time of the year at Piney River highs are ordinarily in the 80's,
and the nighttime is rather chillier of course, generally in the 60's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Piney River fall into the 10's. Piney River is a reasonably wet place ordinarily
with a good deal of rain; of all the months in a year October is the one with the most rain while January is usually the driest month.
