The Alhambra to Woodson stretch of Piney River is 3.5 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Staunton-Waynesboro it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but
if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. The wonderful Nelson/Amherst
County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Piney River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. There's camping available near Piney River. This is a bit of a short stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Alhambra to Woodson section is one of them.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the days of summer highs here at Piney River get into the
80's, and through the night it cools down to the 60's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's; overnight lows through the winter for Piney River tend to be in the 10's. Good hiking is available along the Tolley Gap Trail. Piney River is a reasonably wet place usually with
a great deal of precipitation; of all the months in a year October is the one with the most rain while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
