The natural beauty of Craig/ Alleghany County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are good for beginners. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Roanoke, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Route 311 to Route 18 stretch of Potts Creek in Virginia is 32.5 miles long and is a class I-IV
section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you
came. Potts Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Route 311 to Route 18 stretch is the only one. Now this is a pretty long section, so better bring your camping gear along. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Potts Creek gets a normal amount of annual rain; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain, and February is the month with the least moisture. Good hiking is available along the Cove Trail. Summertime at Potts Creek comes with high temperatures
in the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Potts Creek. You have to unquestionably pop by Piney Point if you're here at Potts Creek; close by Margaret Hollow is a great place to go.
