Virginia whitewater - Pound River, Cumberland Plateau Mountains, Wise/ Dickenson County Wise/ Dickenson county, Route 624 to Pound Fishing Access section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     8.5 miles   The Route 624 to Pound Fishing Access stretch of Pound River is 8.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The scenic beauty of Wise/ Dickenson County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere.     Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The beautiful Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Briefly about the general area: Hiking is a popular thing to do around Pound River; Pine Mountain Trail is a tremendous local trail. During the summertime at Pound River temperatures are generally in the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. High temperatures throughout the winter are normally in   the 40's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at Pound River temperatures sink to the 10's. The amount of precipitation that falls at Pound River is close to the national average; through March this area sees the most rain; the driest month of the year is October.
