The scenic beauty of Virginia and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater paddling here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great experience. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming     back for more. If you're coming from Kingsport-Bristol it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This is a pretty short section so better bring some good walking shoes. The Appalachia to Big Stone Gap section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
