Virginia whitewater - Powell River, Cumberland Plateau Mountains, Wise/ Lee County Wise/ Lee county, Big Stone Gap to Dryden section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     12 miles   If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. The nature scenery of Wise/ Lee County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while     are great attractions for lots of people. This stretch of Powell River in Virginia is 12 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-II section of whitewater. The Big Stone Gap to Dryden stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The river winds through the Cumberland Plateau Mountains and you get great scenery. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. Briefly about the general area: Powell River is a wet place that gets a good deal of rain; May is the wettest month with most rain; October is the month with the least moisture. Yeah, come up here to the Cumberland Plateau Mountains   for a perfect time. Through the summer months here at Powell River, high temperatures commonly get into the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the 60's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Powell River all through the winter usually plunge into the 20's.
