The wonderful Virginia scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature     are great reasons to come. There's camping available near Powell River. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This stretch of Powell River in Lee County is 6.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. The Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is wonderful. Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year at Powell River comes with high temperatures in the 80's, and the nighttime is a little colder of course, mostly in the 60's. For the duration of the winter highs are typically in the 40's while Powell River night low temperatures throughout the winter are in the 20's. Be careful coming to the Cumberland Plateau   Mountains, you might not ever wanna go home again. While staying at Powell River you could always look at Dalton Gap. Hoover Rock is an attention-grabbing spot to stop by while at Powell River, and going for a hike on the Daniel Boone Trail is always a brilliant adventure.
