If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This stretch of Prater Creek in Virginia is 7.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Dickenson County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This is the only paddling section along
Prater Creek. The wild scenery of the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is great. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either
way around here you'll find a large number of good places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the months of summer, highs ordinarily are in the 80's at Prater Creek, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Prater Creek plunge into the 20's.
