The scenic beauty of Virginia and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. There are no other
stretches to paddle along Prater Creek than the Prater to Haysi stretch. Whitewater paddling here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains is a great experience. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The Prater to Haysi section
of Prater Creek is 7.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here.
Briefly about the general area: Prater Creek is a rather wet place generally with much precipitation; most of the rain falls during July; the driest of the months is October. Throughout the months of summer, highs commonly are in the 80's at Prater Creek while night lows are typically in the 60's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's, and night lows at Prater Creek through the wintertime usually drop into the 20's.
