The Prater to Haysi section of Prater Creek in Dickenson County is 7.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The average Virginia whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep
you coming back for more. When you're paddling down a Cumberland Plateau Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There aren’t any hotels right
nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is the only paddling section along Prater Creek. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Prater Creek gets a lot of water; during the month of July you get the most rain around here while October is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the duration
of the summer months at Prater Creek temperatures are usually in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. Highs through the wintertime are commonly in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Prater Creek.
