The beautiful scenery of Bedford/ Campbell County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often easier than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford, as you can see on the road map further down. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby,
you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The Route 603 to Roanoke River section of Roanoke River - North Fork in Virginia is 14 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater.
The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Route 603 to Roanoke River stretch is one of them. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places.
