This run is great, but it is NOT in Bedford or Campbell county not even near. it starts in Mongomry county and flows into Roanoke county.use the put in at the Dixie Caverns wayside on Rt. 11. there are several take outs you can use, the river is next to the road in several places. Says Kurt

worthwhile. The Shawsville to Roanoke River section of Roanoke River - South Fork is 8 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Whitewater paddling here in the
Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. The put-in is not too far from Roanoke, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. The Shawsville to Roanoke River section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river
tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a
good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip.
