Virginia whitewater - Roanoke River - South Fork, Blue Ridge Mountains, Bedford/ Campbell County Bedford/ Campbell county, Shawsville to Roanoke River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     8 miles   This run is great, but it is NOT in Bedford or Campbell county not even near. it starts in Mongomry county and flows into Roanoke county.use the put in at the Dixie Caverns wayside on Rt. 11. there are several take outs you can use, the river is next to the road in several places. Says Kurt The Shawsville to Roanoke River stretch of Roanoke River - South Fork is 8 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so you'd     better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The river winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains and you get great scenery. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. The natural beauty of Virginia and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Roanoke, if you're not familiar   with the area there's a road map further down the page.
