The nature scenery of Botetourt County and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. This section of Roaring Run in Virginia is 1.2 miles long and it is classified as a class V+ section by American Whitewater. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The starting location is a short drive from Roanoke, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way
this is an area with plenty of spots for that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. For all you camping
people there are campgrounds nearby. This is an extremely short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. When you're paddling down a Blue Ridge Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The County line to Recreation Area section is the only paddling section along Roaring Run.
Briefly about the general area: Through the days of summer highs here at Roaring Run get into
the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Roaring Run fall into the 20's. Roaring Run gets a common amount of yearly precipitation; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month.
