The nature scenery of Virginia and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great. This section of Russell Fork in Dickenson County is 3 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III+ section by American Whitewater. The Cumberland Plateau Mountains scenery is wonderful. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't
matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside
this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. This is a bit of a short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes.
Briefly about the general area: Russell Fork is a pretty wet place mostly with a great deal of rain; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain, and October on the other hand is the driest.
So much exciting stuff to do here in the Cumberland Plateau Mountains, too magnificent to be true. Don't forget to pop by Skegg Hole while you're here at Russell Fork. Through the long summer days at Russell Fork temperatures are generally in the 80's while overnight lows
are frequently in the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are usually in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Russell Fork. It's always tremendous to stop at Cold Spring, and you need to go to The Breaks since you're here.
