Virginia whitewater - Shaws Fork, Highland County Highland county, Headwaters to Liberty section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     4.5 miles   The nature scenery of Highland County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section of Shaws Fork in Virginia is 4.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This is the only paddling section along Shaws Fork. The put-in location is a short drive     from Staunton-Waynesboro, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The campgrounds here at Shaws Fork are pretty good. Briefly about the general area: Shaws Fork gets a typical amount of yearly precipitation; most of the rain falls through July, and January is the month with the least moisture. There is a great hiking trail right next door to Shaws Fork called the Shenandoah Mountain Trail. Shaws Fork is in the neighborhood of Wilson Hollow which is beyond doubt worth visiting, and on a fine day you can take a hike along the Benson Run Trail. At Shaws Fork all through the   warm months highs are in the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. During the winter the highs are usually in the 30's, and night lows in the 10's for Shaws Fork.
