The North Fork to Piney section of Shoe Creek in Virginia is 2 miles long and has been rated as a class III-V section by American Whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Staunton-Waynesboro, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors
are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is a bit of a short stretch so no need to bring snacks. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you
want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beautiful scenery of Amherst/Nelson County and the water flowing gracefully down Shoe Creek are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the months of summer highs here at Shoe Creek reach the 80's. During the moonlight hours it's usually in the 60's. During the wintertime the highs are mostly in the 40's; night lows all through the wintertime for Shoe Creek tend to
be in the 10's. Shoe Creek gets a great deal of water; most of the rain falls through October, and January is the month with the least moisture. Cash Hollow is a good location to explore.
