Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia are easier than the national norm, so don't forget that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. If you're coming from Staunton-Waynesboro it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions
for lots of people. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch of Shoe Creek in Amherst/Nelson County is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-V section. This section is quite short so no need to bring snacks. Some people prefer whitewater
rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. The wonderful Amherst/Nelson County scenery and the cool fresh water have people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Shoe Creek is a pretty wet place ordinarily with much precipitation; the month with most of the rain is October; January is when it's the driest. For the period of the long summer days at Shoe Creek temperatures are generally in the 80's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 60's. For the period of the winter highs are typically
in the 40's, and all through the dark hours in the winter at Shoe Creek temperatures descend to the 10's. If you're here, you might as well go to Cash Hollow.
