Virginia whitewater - Simpson Creek, Blue Ridge Mountains, Alleghany County
Alleghany
county,
Truckstop to Route 60 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 6.5 miles
The natural beauty of Alleghany County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This stretch of Simpson Creek is 6.5 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The campgrounds here at Simpson Creek are pretty good. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are
great reasons to come. There are no other sections to paddle along Simpson Creek than the Truckstop to Route 60 section. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whether
you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is an added bonus. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of rain makes Simpson Creek a rather wet place; July is the month that gets the most rain, and December meanwhile is the driest month. Now, you may think that's plenty but there's even more exciting things to do here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The warmest time of the year
brings highs in the 80's to Simpson Creek. During the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 50's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 30's, and nighttime lows through the wintertime for Simpson Creek tend to be in the 10's. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Simpson Creek; White Rock Tower Trail is a tremendous local trail, and why not take a refreshing hike along the North Branch Trail.
