The starting location is a short drive from Charlottesville, as you can see on the road map further down. The nature scenery of Buckingham County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. This section of Slate River in Virginia is 9.5 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II section by American Whitewater. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive
a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is the only paddling stretch along Slate River. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too
many other rivers for that. There's camping available near Slate River. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip.
Briefly about the general area: At Slate River during the long summer days highs are in the 80's with overnight lows in the 60's. The cold
days of the winter come with highs in the 40's; after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Slate River dip into the 20's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Slate River a wet spot; during the month of October you get the most rain around here, and the driest month of the year is January.
