The starting location is a short drive from Charlottesville, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of Buckingham County and the water flowing gracefully down Slate River attract people from near and far. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Virginia you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so keep in mind
that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is the only paddling section along Slate River. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. You
might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good places for that around here. The campgrounds here at Slate River are pretty good. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. The Diana Mills to James River stretch of Slate River in Buckingham County is 9.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section.
Briefly about the general area: During the summer months here at Slate River, high temperatures ordinarily reach
the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's while Slate River night low temperatures during the winter are in the 20's. Slate River gets a good deal of water; during October this area sees the most rain, and the driest month is January.
