The nature scenery of Patrick County and the water flowing gracefully down Smith River make the trip here worthwhile. The Charity to Backwater of Philpott Lake section of Smith River is 9.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section
by American Whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if
you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There's camping available near Smith River. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Martinsville, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more.
This is the only paddling stretch along Smith River.
