The beautiful scenery of Virginia and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This     is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. The Charity to Backwater of Philpott Lake stretch is the only paddling stretch along Smith River. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia are easier than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Briefly about the general area: White Falls is a great local attraction. All the water falling down from the sky makes Smith   River a wet location; the month with most of the rain is October while January is usually the driest month. Summer at Smith River comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. All through the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's; through the dark hours in the wintertime at Smith River temperatures plunge to the 20's.
