The nature scenery of Virginia and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. If you're coming from Harrisonburg it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often     more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less demanding. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. There's camping available near South River. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Waynesboro to Lynnwood stretch is one of them. Briefly about the general area: Just can't get enough of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On a   wonderful day at South River you can take a hike along the Rocks Mountain Trail. There is a fine hiking trail near South River called the Wildcat Ridge Trail, and a wonderful spot to have a look at is Dorsey Hanger Hollow. From a precipitation point of view South River is a relatively normal spot; August is the month that gets the most rain while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the period of the summer at South River highs are frequently in the 80's. Throughout the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 60's. Highs during the wintertime are mostly in the 40's, and nighttime lows during the wintertime for South River tend to be in the 10's.
