Scott
county,
Upper Gorge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV+(V) 1.5 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so better not forget that many runs in this state are very easy. The nature scenery of Scott County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch of Stock Creek is 1.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV+(V) section. This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. There are campgrounds
quite near the river where you can camp. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. There
are many good hotels to choose from, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The starting location is a short drive from Kingsport-Bristol, as you can see on the road map further down. The Upper Gorge stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system.
