If you're coming from Kingsport-Bristol it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of Stock Creek is 1.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV+(V) section of whitewater. The scenic beauty of Scott County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The Upper Gorge stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than
the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. There's
camping available near Stock Creek. This is a short paddling stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. No shortage of good hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: Near Stock Creek you hit upon brilliant places like Jesse Hollow. During the long summer days highs here at Stock Creek get into the 80's. Once the sun is down it falls
down to the 60's. During the winter highs are in the 40's; during the dark hours in the wintertime at Stock Creek temperatures descend to the 20's. From a rainfall point of view Stock Creek is a relatively normal site; of all the months in a year March is the one with the most rain, and October is the month with the least moisture.
