The scenic beauty of Virginia and the water flowing gracefully down Thornton River make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia are easier than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. This section of Thornton River in Rappahannock County is 7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. The Sperryville to Rock Mills section is the only
paddling section along Thornton River. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either
way this area has a large number of paddling places. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Good hiking is available along the The Peak Trail. Thornton River gets a normal amount of rainfall; July is the month that gets the most rain; February is when it's the driest. Summer at Thornton River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's, and the night is slightly chillier of course, regularly in the 60's. Highs all through the winter are mostly in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Thornton River are in the 20's.
