The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. This section of Thornton River in Rappahannock County is 7 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Virginia scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a
one day trip. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or
both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. The campgrounds here at Thornton River are pretty good. Thornton River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Sperryville to Rock Mills stretch is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: Through the warm months, highs mostly are in the 80's at Thornton River, and the night is quite chillier of course, generally in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's, and overnight lows in the 20's for Thornton River. Don't leave Thornton River without first going
for a hike along the The Peak Trail. Thornton River is a good spot of common rain; through July this area sees the most rain, and February on the other hand is the driest.
