Virginia whitewater - Tumbling Creek, Russell County Russell county, Rt. 613 to Route 611 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III+     1 miles   The put-in location is a short drive from Bristol, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Russell County scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This is a very short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. This section of Tumbling Creek     is 1 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III+ section of whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Virginia are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. Briefly about the general area: Near Tumbling Creek you hit upon Little Tumbling Cove which is a brilliant place to take a look at. The high level of rain makes Tumbling Creek a pretty wet site; the wettest month of the year is generally July, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is February. Through the months of summer at Tumbling   Creek highs are frequently in the 80's, and through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Tumbling Creek.
