If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Alleghany County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This section of Wilson Creek in Alleghany County is 7.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. Since you're on this site
you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. There are no other sections to paddle along Wilson Creek than the Douthat Park Dam to Jackson River section. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable
for an afternoon trip. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: If the weather is delightful here at Wilson Creek, you can go for a hike along the Beards Gap Trail; you could always explore McGraw Hollow. A great deal of rain falls at Wilson Creek; July is the wettest month with most rain, and December is the month with the least
moisture. While you're here at Wilson Creek you can take a hike along the Brushy Hollow Trail. During the long summer days highs here at Wilson Creek get into the 80's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 30's with temperatures at Wilson Creek dipping down into the 10's through winter nights.
