Virginia whitewater - Wilson Creek, Alleghany County Alleghany county, Douthat Park Dam to Jackson River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-III     7.5 miles   The wonderful Virginia scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. This section of Wilson Creek is 7.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Virginia are easier than the national norm, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Since     you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. Wilson Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Douthat Park Dam to Jackson River stretch is the only one. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: Near Wilson Creek you find magnificent spots like McGraw Hollow; there is a delightful hiking trail nearby called the Beards Gap Trail. High temperatures at Wilson Creek during the warm days of summer are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 50's. Daytime highs all through the wintertime are in the 30's, and after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures at   Wilson Creek dip into the 10's. Wilson Creek is a relatively wet place typically with a lot of rain; most of the rain falls during July while December is the month with the least amount of precipitation. The Brushy Hollow Trail is a perfect hiking trail in the vicinity of Wilson Creek.
