The Upper Clearwater Road access to Clearwater Campground stretch of Clearwater River is 9.5 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The starting location is a short drive from Port Angeles, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Washington are often tougher than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The beautiful Olympic Mountains scenery
is an added bonus. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. The nature scenery of Washington and the playfulness of the water have
people coming here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Upper Clearwater Road access to Clearwater Campground section is one of them. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places.
Briefly about the general area: Clearwater River is a
pretty wet place typically with a good deal of rain; most of the rain falls during December while August is commonly the driest month. Through the warm months at Clearwater River highs are mostly in the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 40's. High temperatures throughout
the winter are normally in the 40's, and through the dark hours in the winter at Clearwater River temperatures sink to the 30's.
