Washington whitewater - Clearwater River, Olympic Mountains, Jefferson County
Jefferson
county,
144 Gross Bridge to Queets River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 11.5 miles
The nature scenery of Washington and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Washington are often more challenging than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The 144 Gross Bridge to Queets River stretch of Clearwater River is 11.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II section. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camp
stove too. The wild scenery of the Olympic Mountains is great. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way this area has a large number of paddling places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too.
Briefly about the general area: Life's too short to enjoy all the entertaining stuff in the Olympic Mountains. All the water falling down from the sky makes Clearwater River a wet site; the wettest month of the year is
typically December, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is August. For the duration of the warm days of summer at Clearwater River temperatures are frequently in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 40's. For the period of the
winter this place gets highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Clearwater River drop into the 30's. Don't leave Clearwater River without first paying a visit to Parson Rapids It's always brilliant to stop at Barker Rapids.
