The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. This section of Cowlitz River in Lewis County is 7.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. The river winds through the Northern Cascade Range and you get great scenery. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. This river system
has a few good paddling stretches and the La Wis Wis Campground to Packwood section is one of them. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. No matter
if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The beautiful scenery of Washington and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip.
Briefly about the general area: There's pleasant hiking along the Tatoosh Trail, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Cowlitz River; Backbone Ridge Trail is a perfect local trail. And if that's not enough there's plenty more entertaining stuff to
do in the Northern Cascade Range. For the duration of the warm months here at Cowlitz River, high temperatures ordinarily get into the 70's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 40's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's; night lows through the
wintertime for Cowlitz River tend to be in the 20's. The high level of precipitation makes Cowlitz River a relatively wet place; January is when you get the most snow here, and July is the month with the least moisture.
