Washington whitewater - Cowlitz River, Northern Cascade Range, Lewis County Lewis county, La Wis Wis Campground to Packwood section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II     7.6 miles   The La Wis Wis Campground to Packwood stretch of Cowlitz River in Lewis County is 7.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. The beautiful scenery of Lewis County and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile.     There's camping available near Cowlitz River. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The Northern Cascade Range scenery is wonderful. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Briefly about the general area: Cowlitz River frequently gets a large amount of precipitation; the month with most of the snow is January, and the driest month of the year is July. Summertime at Cowlitz River arrives with high temperatures in the 70's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 40's. The winter comes with highs in the 30's with temperatures   at Cowlitz River dipping down into the 20's all through winter nights. And that's not all there is to do here in the Northern Cascade Range. There is a nice hiking trail next to Cowlitz River called the Tatoosh Trail, and going for a hike on the Backbone Ridge Trail is always a wonderful adventure.
