The wonderful Lewis County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Cowlitz River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The La Wis Wis Campground to Packwood stretch of Cowlitz River in Washington is 7.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II section of whitewater. The wild scenery of the Northern Cascade Range is great. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Washington are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here
are not safe for beginners. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the La Wis Wis Campground to Packwood section is one of them. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but
do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come.
Briefly about the general area: All through the months of summer at Cowlitz River highs are mostly in the 70's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. High temperatures during
the winter are normally in the 30's, and night lows during the winter for Cowlitz River tend to be in the 20's. Cowlitz River sees pretty high levels of rain; most of the snow falls throughout January; the driest month is July. Yep, outdoors exciting things truly is abundant
here in the Northern Cascade Range. On a tremendous day at Cowlitz River you can take a hike along the Tatoosh Trail, and the Backbone Ridge Trail is a great hiking trail close by.
