Washington whitewater - Deer Creek, Northern Cascade Range, Snohomish/Skagit County
Snohomish/Skagit
county,
Bridge at Rick Creek to mouth section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V+ 11 miles
The beautiful scenery of Washington and the water flowing gracefully down Deer Creek make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Deer Creek is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V+ section by American Whitewater. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The average Washington whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from
around here don't forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. Deer Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Bridge at Rick Creek to mouth section is the only one. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive
a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. The river winds through the Northern Cascade Range and you get great scenery. If you're coming from Mount Vernon-Anacortes it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Deer Creek during the
summer are in the 70's with night lows in the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 40's with temperatures at Deer Creek dipping down into the 30's throughout winter nights. Deer Creek is a rather wet place commonly with lots of rain; through the month of December you get the most rain around here, and July meanwhile is the driest month.
