Washington whitewater - Elwha River, Olympic Mountains, Clallam County

Clallam county, Grand Canyon section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS V     8.5 miles
The beautiful scenery of Clallam County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The campgrounds here at Elwha River are pretty good. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Grand Canyon stretch is one of them. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. If you're coming from Port
Angeles it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beauty of the Olympic Mountains is a great plus for this river. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning
trip. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. The Grand Canyon stretch of Elwha River in Washington is 8.5 miles long and it is classified as a class V section by American Whitewater.

You'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Hurricane Ridge Ski Lodge if you're here; if you're here, you might as well take a look at Grand Canyon. Lots of fun awaits you along this river. Going for a hike on the Long Ridge Trail is always a delightful adventure. The high level of rain makes Elwha River a relatively wet site; during the month of December you get the most rain around here, and July meanwhile is the driest month.
