The natural beauty of Cowlitz County and the water flowing gracefully down Green River attract people from near and far. This section of Green River in Washington is 11.7 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV section. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Longview-Kelso, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The campgrounds here at Green River are pretty good. Green River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Cascade Creek to gaging station stretch is the only one.
Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners.
Whitewater paddling here in the Northern Cascade Range is a great experience. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your camping stuff too. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: Green River is a rather wet place mostly with a good
deal of precipitation; December is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is July. High temperatures at Green River during the months of summer are in the 70's with night lows in the 40's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Green River throughout the wintertime typically fall into the 30's.
