The wonderful Cowlitz County scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This section of Kalama River in Washington is 15 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Whitewater paddling here in
the Northern Cascade Range is a great experience. The put-in location is a short drive from Longview-Kelso, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Upper Kalama Falls to Gobar Creek section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove.

down to the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the winter at Kalama River temperatures dip to the 30's. There is a perfect hiking trail near Kalama River called the Georges Peak Trail. Kalama River usually gets a large amount of precipitation; the month with most of the rain is December, and the driest of the months is July.
