Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. This stretch of Kalama River in Washington is 9.5 miles long and has been rated as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
The wild scenery of the Northern Cascade Range is great. If you're coming from Longview-Kelso it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There
are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good spots. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. The beautiful scenery of Cowlitz County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the summertime, highs usually are in the 70's at Kalama River
with night lows in the 50's. All through the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's, and after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Kalama River sink into the 30's. Kalama River gets a great deal of water; December is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month is July.
