Washington whitewater - Matheny Creek, Olympic Mountains, Jefferson County Jefferson county, North Fork to FR 21 Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV+     9 miles   The North Fork to FR 21 Bridge section of Matheny Creek in Jefferson County is 9 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV+ section of whitewater. The wonderful Jefferson County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The beautiful Olympic Mountains scenery is an added bonus. This is a pretty decent length section, it's     perfect for a one day trip. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The put-in is not too far from Port Angeles, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Washington is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. Briefly about the general area: Matheny Creek gets much water; December is the wettest month with most rain, and August   is when it's the driest. Throughout the warm months, highs typically are in the 70's at Matheny Creek. Summer overnight lows drop down to the 40's. For the duration of the winter this place gets highs in the 40's; after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Matheny Creek fall into the 30's.
