The beautiful scenery of Washington and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Port Angeles, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The North Fork to FR 21 Bridge section of Matheny Creek in Jefferson County is 9 miles long and has been determined
by American Whitewater to be a class IV+ section. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon trip. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There
are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. The average Washington whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The Olympic Mountains scenery is wonderful.
Briefly about the general area: Matheny Creek is a rather wet place commonly with a large
amount of rainfall; during the month of December you get the most rain around here; August on the other hand is the driest. High temperatures at Matheny Creek during the warm months are in the 70's; the overnight is rather colder of course, mostly in the 40's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's; after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Matheny Creek fall into the 30's.
