Washington whitewater - Naches River, Northern Cascade Range, Yakima County
Yakima
county,
Sawmill Flat to bl. Town of Naches section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 34 miles
On July 19, 2009 we started at Boulder caves, floated for 2 1/2 hours and got out at Squaw Rock resort. The gauge was 50. 3 ft. There was just enough water, any lower and we would have been hitting rocks in the riffles. It was way fun!! The only thing to look out for is the ''Gaunlet''. About 3/4 of the way down. STAY LEFT. There is a large rock that splits the river, if you stay left it is a fun ride, otherwise you will end up plastered to the rock.
We were in inflatable kayaks. Have fun!! Says Lori
This stretch of Naches River in Washington
is 34 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Ellensburg, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Yakima County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you
feel great. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This is the only paddling section along Naches River. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve
in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. The beautiful Northern Cascade Range scenery is an added bonus. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so make
sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Naches River without first paying a visit to Box Spring, and you might also want to pay a visit to Nile Valley if you're here at Naches River. Now, you may feel that's
heaps but there's even more cool stuff to do here in the Northern Cascade Range. Throughout the summertime, highs regularly are in the 80's at Naches River; the nighttime is fairly chillier of course, mostly in the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 30's,
and during the dark hours in the winter at Naches River temperatures sink to the 20's. Naches River gets very little rain; December is the wettest month with most snow; the driest of the months is July.
