Mason
county,
Staircase to Lake Cushman section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 1.5 miles
The put-in location is a short drive from Shelton, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Mason County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Washington are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make
reservations in advance you're all set. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. Great exercise and just hanging out with
mother nature will make you glad you came. The beautiful Olympic Mountains scenery is an added bonus. This stretch of Skokomish River - North Fork is 1.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Staircase to Lake Cushman section is one of them.
