The starting point is not too far from Mount Vernon-Anacortes, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Washington and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. This section of Skookum Creek in Whatcom County is 1.25 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for
a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that rivers here are
less forgiving. This is an extremely short stretch so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. The beauty of the Northern Cascade Range is a great plus for this river. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. The Above lower gorge to South Fork of Nooksack section is the only paddling section along Skookum Creek.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of precipitation makes Skookum Creek a pretty wet place; November is the
month that gets the most rain; the driest of the months is July. At Skookum Creek through the warmest time of the year highs are in the 70's, and all through the night it cools down to the 50's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Skookum Creek during the winter commonly dip into the 30's.
