This stretch of Toutle - South Fork in Cowlitz County is 11 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Longview-Kelso, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number     of good spots. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The Harrington Place to Big Wolf Creek section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. The beautiful Northern Cascade Range scenery is an added bonus. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Washington is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. Briefly about the general area: Throughout the long summer days at Toutle - South Fork highs are ordinarily in the 70's. During the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 40's. High   temperatures through the winter are normally in the 40's, and after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at Toutle - South Fork fall into the 30's.
