Washington whitewater - Trout Creek, Northern Cascade Range, Skamania County
Skamania
county,
FR 43 to Wind River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V 6.3 miles
This section of Trout Creek is 6.3 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V section. The put-in is not too far from Hood River, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Skamania County and the water flowing gracefully down Trout Creek are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Washington are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The beauty of the Northern
Cascade Range is a great plus for this river. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. There
are no other stretches to paddle along Trout Creek than the FR 43 to Wind River stretch. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers.
Briefly about the general area: A large amount of rainfall falls at Trout Creek; December is when you get the most rain here, and the driest of the months is July. Just can't
get enough of the Northern Cascade Range. There is a good hiking trail near Trout Creek called the Rock Creek Trail. For the duration of the warm days of summer, highs regularly are in the 70's at Trout Creek. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 50's. Highs
all through the winter are frequently in the 40's, and night lows in the 30's for Trout Creek. Going for a hike on the Soda Peaks Trail is always a glorious adventure, and a great forest nearby is Wind River Experimental Forest.
