If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Washington you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The Headwaters to Queets Campground stretch of Tshletshy River in Jefferson County is 20 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V section. If you're coming from Port Angeles it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Olympic Mountains scenery is wonderful. There are campgrounds
quite near the river where you can camp. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This is the only paddling section along Tshletshy River. The nature scenery of Jefferson County and the sparkling of
the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year at Tshletshy River arrives with high temperatures in the 70's. Throughout the moonlight hours it's mostly
in the 40's. All through the wintertime the highs are frequently in the 40's while Tshletshy River nighttime low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 30's. The high level of precipitation makes Tshletshy River a reasonably wet site; December is the month that gets the most rain while August is mostly the driest month.
