The natural beauty of Kittitas County and the water flowing gracefully down Waptus River attract people from near and far. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Washington are harder than the national norm, so better not
forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. This section of Waptus River in Washington is 4 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III+(IV) section by American Whitewater. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. No matter
if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. Whitewater paddling here in the Northern Cascade Range is a great experience. Waptus River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Waptus Lake trail to Salmon La Sac stretch is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: Don't leave Waptus River without first going for a hike along the Red Mountain Trail; a spree to Waptus River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Little Salmon la Sac. This is a really good river. A short tour to Salmon
la Sac is always worthwhile. Now, you may think that's a load but there's even more entertaining things to do here in the Northern Cascade Range. China Point is an interesting site to check out while at Waptus River, and there are brilliant locations to discover along the Davis
Peak Lookout Trail. Lots of rainfall falls at Waptus River; through the month of January you get the most snow around here, and the driest of the months is July. All through the days of summer, highs regularly are in the 60's at Waptus River. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 40's. Highs all through the wintertime are generally in the 20's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Waptus River.
