If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The Dougan Falls to Salmon Falls stretch of Washougal River in Washington is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came.
This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. The campgrounds here at Washougal River are pretty good. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. There are plenty of other sections in this
river system that can be paddled as well. The wild scenery of the Northern Cascade Range is great. The wonderful Washington scenery and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle.
Briefly about the general area: During the warm days of summer at Washougal River temperatures are regularly in the 70's with nighttime lows in the 40's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and overnight lows at Washougal River through the wintertime commonly drop into the 30's. The high level of precipitation makes Washougal
River a reasonably wet site; the month with most of the rain is December while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Dougan Falls, and Washougal River is right by the Washougal Trail. Having a good time in the Northern Cascade Range is uncomplicated.
