Washington whitewater - Wind River, Northern Cascade Range, Skamania County
Skamania
county,
Mineral Springs to Stabler section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 7.2 miles
The starting point is not too far from Hood River, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Mineral Springs to Stabler section of Wind River in Skamania County is 7.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The wonderful Washington scenery and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. When you're paddling down a Northern Cascade
Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The
campgrounds here at Wind River are pretty good. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too.
Briefly about the general area: On a great day at Wind River you can take
a hike along the Soda Peaks Trail, and there is a great hiking trail close by called the Paradise Trail. And if that's not enough there's a heap more amusing things to do in the Northern Cascade Range. During the summer months, highs mostly are in the 70's at Wind River; all
through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. During the winter highs are in the 40's; night lows at Wind River all through the wintertime regularly plunge into the 30's. Wind River gets a good deal of water; during the month of December you get the most rain around here while July is ordinarily the driest month.
