Washington whitewater - Wind River, Northern Cascade Range, Skamania County
Skamania
county,
Ranger Station Close to Stabler to High Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V 6 miles
Hello,
Anybody who puts-in where the road map link on the webpage indicates and expects to find class IV-V water is going to be disappointed. The put-in is on the right bank slightly downstream of where the map shows the take-out (basically, at Stabler) and the take-out is on the right bank a half-mile or so above High Bridge (where the red line crosses the river on the map).

Hello,
I run this section of the Wind regularly and I have never heard anybody refer to it as Ranger Station Close
to Stabler to High Bridge. It's common names are Stabler to High Bridge and the Upper Wind. The putin is much closer to Stabler than to the Ranger Station near Stabler (which is actually closer to the put-in on Trout Creek).

If
you're coming from Hood River it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The Ranger Station Close to Stabler to High Bridge section of Wind River is 6 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Washington and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The wild scenery of the
Northern Cascade Range is great. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Whitewater rafting
and kayaking spots in Washington tend to be more challenging than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. And of course,
there are campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more.
Briefly about the general area: The Soda Peaks Trail is a glorious hiking trail in close proximity to Wind River, and there is a wonderful hiking
trail nearby called the Paradise Trail. Just can't get enough of the Northern Cascade Range. Wind River gets a good deal of water; the wettest month of the year is usually December, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is July. High temperatures at Wind
River during the long summer days are in the 70's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 50's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 40's while Wind River night low temperatures all through the winter are in the 30's.
