The natural beauty of Summers County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in West Virginia is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as hard as elsewhere. This section of Big Creek in Summers County is 2.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Oak Hill, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might have to
settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. There's camping available near Big Creek. This is one of a small number
of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: Sawyer Hollow is a brilliant spot to have a look at close by. Big Creek is a relatively wet place generally with a great deal of rain; through the month of July you get the most rain around here while
February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. At Big Creek throughout the warm days of summer highs are in the 80's, and the night is slightly chillier of course, mostly in the 50's. For the period of the wintertime highs are usually in the 30's, and after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at Big Creek descend into the 10's.
